North Yorkshire: Avian Influenza Prevention Zone
On 21 November 2021, a new Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been declared in parts of North Yorkshire in England, affecting the districts of Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire. This means that it is a legal requirement for all bird keepers in that area to keep their birds indoors and to follow strict biosecurity measures to limit the spread of and eradicate the disease.
This localised AIPZ includes additional housing measures to help minimise the risk from wild birds and other sources. Housing is, however, only one part of disease prevention and control. It is also essential that all bird keepers implement the highest standards of biosecurity both at the perimeter of their properties and within the premises to prevent disease being spread between different houses.
The government Chief Veterinary Officer is urging bird keepers to act immediately in response to the new housing localised measures, including taking steps to safeguard animal welfare, consult their vet and where necessary put up additional housing.

Veterans - do you know about the Veteran Friendly GP Practice accreditation scheme?
There are 2.2 million Armed Forces veterans in England. We are proud to support the RCGP’s Veteran Friendly GP Practice accreditation scheme, enabling practices to deliver the best possible care and treatment to patients who have served in the Armed Forces. It’s part of the health commitments enshrined in the Armed Forces Covenant.
Veteran Friendly GP practices have a specially trained clinical lead for veterans’ health and support veteran patients to access dedicated health services. Nearly 1,100 practices are now Veteran Friendly accredited through the scheme run by the Royal College of General Practitioners in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement.

Calling all UK GP practices: are you part of the Veteran Friendly GP Practice accreditation scheme?
There are 2.2 million Armed Forces veterans in England. Studies suggest veterans may be less likely to seek help if they feel their healthcare professional won’t understand their health needs.
The Veteran Friendly GP Practice accreditation scheme supports practices to deliver the best possible care and treatment for patients who have served in the Armed Forces. It also provides important reassurance to veterans that a practice understands their specific health needs and can support them.
Nearly 1,100 GP practices are now accredited through this scheme and the simple process starts with the completion of a short form.
The Veteran Friendly GP Practice accreditation scheme is run by the Royal College of General Practitioners in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement. Find out more at rcgp.org.uk/veterans
