Scotland: RCET new name, Forces Children Scotland

We have made big changes

Today, we have officially launched as Forces Children Scotland!

It was a major decision to change things, and we know that adapting to change can be hard. However, we realised our former name was proving a barrier to helping others understand what we do.
In changing our name, we're ready! We hope you like all the big changes we have made in co-producing our new brand with children and young people.

Broadband Providers Drop Cancellation Fees for Armed Forces Personnel

Mark Lancaster, Minister for Defence Veterans, Reserves and Personnel has announced that armed forces personnel will no longer have to face cancellation fees for their broadband and media packages when posted overseas or to another part of the UK not covered by their current provider.

The commitment from the UK’s biggest broadband providers representing 95 per cent of Britain’s broadband market comes into force immediately, and will benefit tens of thousands of forces households in the UK and abroad.

The change agreed to under the tenets of the Armed Forces Covenant includes BT, EE, Plusnet, Talk Talk and Virgin Media, who have all committed to treating military personnel fairly when cancelling their contracts.
Up until now, members of the armed forces deployed overseas or to different part of the UK not covered by their provider could be forced to pay a cancellation fee. They will no longer have to face this cost and be disadvantaged due to the mobile nature of service life

Scotland: Child Protection Scotland - stay safe online

STAY SAFE ONLINE

During the pandemic, many children and young people have spent more time online than usual.

In the month Police Scotland reported a 13.4% increase in reports of online abuse and exploitation of young people, we’re running our Keeping Kids Safe Online campaign.
Mobile phones, tablets, laptops and computers have been essential tools for keeping Scotland’s children educated and entertained, especially during lockdown. Sadly, more time online has increased the risk of online exploitation and abuse, making it more important than ever that parents and carers learn how to protect their children from internet-savvy online abusers.
The key to helping keep your kids safe is to be curious. Be calm, friendly and chatty about what your children are doing online – ask them lots of questions about what they look at online and who they are talking to. And don’t just ask them just once, make it a habit to have a regular check in with them about their online lives.
We want to encourage parents and carers to be curious and actively interested in what their children are doing online, and to learn how to help keep them safe from the dangers of online abuse or exploitation.

Read more about how you can keep children safe online here:

Scotland: Police Scotland advice for keeping you and your dog safe

💻 Make sure your dog's microchip is kept up to date
🔟 Use a collar & dog tag displaying your contact details (use your surname, not your dog's name)
🚶 Vary the times you walk & the routes you take. Practice good recall & make sure your dog is always in sight
💬 Be wary of strangers asking you questions about your dog
🏡 Make sure your garden is secure & don't leave your dog outside unsupervised
🐶 Don't leave your dog tied up alone, outside shops
🚗 Dogs in cars are an easy target - don't leave them unattended
👀 Be extra vigilant if you have a pregnant dog or litter of puppies
📱 Be wary of what details you share online, such as walking routes or specific locations

What should you do if your dog is lost or suspected stolen?

📞 Phone 101 to report a stolen or missing dog, unless you're witnessing the crime taking place then phone 999
💻 Notify your dog's microchip database
🌐 Post on social media & missing animal websites
🐕 Call local vet clinics, rescues and the local animal warden

Scotland: Erskine transitional supported accommodation for Veterans

Erskine provides unrivalled support to veterans in Scotland, through four care homes and a Veterans Village, comprising of 44 cottages, an Activity Centre, five Assisted Living Apartments and 24 Single Living Apartments.
Erskine has recently completed the build of 24 apartments on the Bishopton Estate. These apartments, which will be known as David Boyle Court, will be prioritised for occupation by single ex-service men and women of working age, and will be available for tenancy in Spring 2021. This project is to support Service leavers and Veterans whose life or transition plans have been disrupted. The accommodation is offered with wrapround support so that Veterans have a mutual support base in which to reflect, reorientate and retrain before relocating to the region and employment of their choice – giving back to their community in the way we know they can.
