Southampton: 2024 marks the 80 Anniversary of D- Day

This year, the UK commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944 with a series of major commemorations and events across the UK and in France.

Also known as D-Day, the historic operation (Operation Overlord) saw the Allied Forces mount a large-scale invasion of Nazi-occupied France that ultimately tipped the course of the Second World War in the Allies’ favour.

Southampton played a central role in preparations for the D-Day landings, with millions of British and American troops based around Southampton Water.

You can find out more about Southampton's role in D-Day on the Southampton Stories website which features content from Southampton Museums Archive.

Read on to find out the special events and activities taking place in the city to commemorate D-Day 80.
