Stafford: Staffordshire smart alert - Cash Machine (ATM) distraction thefts



Cash Machine (ATM) distraction theft is committed by Organised Criminals working alone or as part of a team. Their aim is to steal your PIN, your card and your money.

Reporting -
 
If you are the victim of a Cash Machine (ATM) distraction theft
Report to the Police by calling 101 or going online
Report immediately to your card issuer to freeze your card
Report at the nearest branch of your bank

Distraction Technique Examples -
Standing too close so they distract you or read your PIN as you type it in
Offer you help in order to distract you
Scare you or make you jump to distract you
Drop money on the floor to distract you
Tapping your shoulder or saying you have something on your clothing to distract you
Distract you by saying that the Cash Machine (ATM) is not working and directing you to another machine

Prevention -
Do not allow yourself to be distracted whilst using the cash machine
Look out for anything unusual on or around the Cash Machine (ATM)
Be very aware of your surroundings and of people standing around you
Cover the PIN pad whilst entering your PIN
Secure your cash and card immediately after using the machine

If you are suspicious, or if anything concerns you, cancel your transaction and remove your card!
