Top tips
The festive season can feel overwhelming with much to do, so here’s a few quick tips to help you get prepared and make the most of savings available this Black Friday…
- Make a list – Think about what you need and what you would like to buy in advance. If you have been thinking about bigger purchases like kitchen appliances or tech gadgets, this might be the best time of the year to do it. Having a list can help you feel more prepared and will prevent you from impulsively buying things you don’t need.
- Set a budget – Decide on a budget and stick to it. Black Friday deals offer a great opportunity to save, but it’s easy to get swept away and overspend, so set a budget and keep track of it.
- Don’t miss out on early deals – Don’t wait until Friday 28 November to start browsing – make sure to keep an eye out for savings in the leadup to Black Friday too.
- Use your employee discounts – Remember to check out what you can save with Defence Discount Service, Blue Light Card, and MyLifestyle – you are not limited to only registering with one discount provider.
- Double your discounts – By using Defence Discount Service, Blue Light Card, or MyLifestyle to purchase discounted vouchers for retailers you plan to buy from, you can further increase your savings. For example, if a retailer offers 5% off vouchers, a £100 voucher would cost you £95. As the voucher is a payment method, you can then benefit by using it with any other discount codes available, to save even more money.
- Be cyber safe and alert to scams – When signing up to our employee discount schemes, follow instructions to verify your work status and once registered always use your personal email account – for transactions, correspondence, and push notifications. This ensures compliance with JSP 740 and helps reduce opportunity for MOD email addresses to be involved in third party data breaches. My Lifestyle Accounts now have an extra layer of protection too, with two factor authentication needed. Remember, the frontline is you.
- Holiday Salary Advance – Available for Defence civil servants, a holiday salary advance can help with holiday and Christmas expenses. You can apply for up to two salary advances in a rolling year, up to £500 each if you work full-time and £250 each if you work part-time. Find out how to apply.
Discount services are just one part of your Armed Forces Offer and Defence Civil Servant Offer.
