The Government is consulting on plans to simplify local government in Hampshire and the Solent area, by replacing the current two-tier system with fewer, new single-tier unitary councils.
Included in Government’s consultation is our proposal, developed in partnership with East Hampshire District Council, to create four new unitary councils in our area (three on the Hampshire mainland and a stand-alone unitary council on the Isle of Wight), to replace the current mix of 15 county, district and unitary councils that serve Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.
Hampshire County Council’s proposal is one option presented for consideration in the consultation. Other councils in the area have put forward their ideas for local government reorganization too, in the form of five new unitary councils, which are also included in the consultation.
To find out more about all the proposals in the Government’s consultation, visit the Government's consultation web pages.
A hard copy of the Government’s consultation document and the proposals will also be available for view at each of the County Council’s 40 libraries from next week.
