Wiltshire: Digital phone switchover in January 2027 - are you ready?

The UK’s traditional landline phone service is changing. In January 2027, phone calls will be made using a broadband connection instead of the old copper phone network.

For most people, the change will be straightforward. Your phone number will stay the same, and many existing handsets will continue to work. However, if you rely on devices like telecare alarms, door entry systems or burglar alarms, they may need updating to keep working.

Take action now:
  • Check your devices – make a list of anything that plugs into your phone line or depends on it
  • Contact your provider – your phone or broadband provider can confirm what you need to do and what support is available
  • Plan ahead – providers will contact customers before the change takes place, but early action can help avoid disruption
