The Princess Royal Visits Kent School as Royal Patron
The Duke of York’s Royal Military School welcomed Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to the school, in her role as Royal Patron. This visit provided an opportunity for Her Royal Highness to meet students and staff, and experience life at the school first-hand.
The visit marked an important moment in the school’s continued commitment to supporting young people, including children from Armed Forces families.
During her visit, The Princess Royal met with members of the school community and attended the annual Beret Parade, where she formally presented ceremonial berets to the school’s new Year 7 students.
The Beret Parade marks an important milestone for new students, affectionally known as Dukies, as they are formally welcomed into the school community and become part of its proud and longstanding heritage. The Princess Royal’s attendance provided an opportunity for her to observe the school’s military heritage and traditions in practice, while also meeting staff and students from across the school.
Principal Alex Foreman said: “It was a privilege to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to the school in her role as Royal Patron.
“Today’s Beret Parade perfectly captures what makes the school special. Our newest students were formally welcomed into a community with more than two centuries of history, while our senior students demonstrated the leadership, confidence and character that the School seeks to develop in every Dukie.
“The Princess Royal’s commitment to service and leadership aligns closely with our own values, and we were delighted to share with her the opportunities and experiences that make this school such a distinctive place.”
The Princess Royal’s visit highlights the school’s enduring relationship with the Royal Family. Founded in 1803 under Royal patronage to educate the children of British service personnel, the school has maintained strong royal connections for more than 200 years.
Her Royal Highness has a longstanding connection with the Armed Forces and a deep commitment to supporting service families, who make up more than half the school’s community. As Royal Patron, she supports the school’s mission to provide exceptional education alongside outstanding opportunities that help young people realise their full potential.
The school is also proud of its longstanding association with HRH The Duke of Kent, who served as Royal Patron for many decades. He continues to maintain close ties with the school in his role as Royal Patron Emeritus, reflecting the strength and continuity of the school’s royal heritage.
